Cock rings, delay sprays and arousal gels: a guide for him
Cock rings, desensitizing sprays and arousal gels are popular, and they're often poorly explained. Here's what each one does, how to use it safely, and what it isn't for.
Start with three questions
- What are you after? A snug, full feeling, extra vibration for you and a partner, or a change in how sensitive things feel?
- Stretchy or rigid? Stretchy silicone rings are adjustable and easy to take off. Metal rings need exact sizing.
- Is your partner involved? Vibrating rings can stimulate both of you, and sprays and gels can transfer to your partner's skin.
Not a treatment
None of these products treats erectile dysfunction or any other medical condition. If getting or keeping an erection, or coming sooner than you'd like, is a regular problem, talk to a doctor. It's common, there are proper treatments, and it can be linked to other health conditions that are worth checking.
Cock rings: what they are
A cock ring fits around the base of the penis, or around the penis and testicles. It gently slows blood flowing back out, which many people enjoy as a snug, full feeling. That same effect is why time limits matter.
| Type | Examples | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Stretchy silicone | Je Joue Maximum Stretch Silicone Cock Ring Black ($19.99), Je Joue Medium Stretch Silicone Cock Ring Green ($19.99), ROMP Remix Trio Penis Rings ($41.99) | A first ring; easy on, easy off |
| Multi-ring sling | Oxballs Tri-Sport 3-Ring Sling Black ($31.95) | Three stretchy rings in different sizes, worn around the penis and testicles |
| Vibrating | Satisfyer Mighty One Rechargeable Vibrating Cock Ring ($56.99), We-Vibe Pivot Vibrating Couples Ring with We Connect App Control ($129.95) | Adding vibration that a partner can feel too |
| Metal | Rouge Stainless Steel 3 Piece Cock Ring Set (45/50/55mm) - Silver ($34.95) | Experienced users who know their size |
Cock ring safety
- 20 to 30 minutes at most. Take it off after that, even if everything feels fine.
- Never sleep in one.
- Take it off straight away if you feel numbness, coldness, tingling or pain, or if the skin turns blue, purple or very dark.
- Use lube to put it on and take it off, and trim the hair at the base first so it doesn't pull.
- Talk to a doctor first if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, or have a circulation problem.
- If a ring won't come off, don't wait for it to loosen. Go to the nearest emergency department. Staff there have seen it before.
Metal rings need the right size
A metal ring can't stretch, so sizing matters more than with any other ring.
- Start with silicone until you know how a ring should feel.
- Put a metal ring on while soft, and only choose a size you can take off easily once you're soft again.
- A graduated set helps you find your fit. Rouge Stainless Steel 3 Piece Cock Ring Set (45/50/55mm) - Silver ($34.95) comes in 45 mm, 50 mm and 55 mm.
- If you're between sizes, go larger. A ring that's too small is the one that gets stuck.
Delay and desensitizing sprays
These sprays contain a local anaesthetic, such as lidocaine, that reduces sensation in the skin where it's applied. Use the smallest amount the label allows, and stop if your skin becomes irritated.
Pound International Stud 100 Male Genital Desensitizer Spray ($39.95) contains 9.6% lidocaine and is licensed in Canada.
- Follow the label exactly: the number of sprays and the wait time before sex. More isn't better.
- Partner transfer is real. What's left on the skin can numb your partner too. Wipe or wash it off as the label directs before contact.
- Condoms: check the label says the product is safe to use with condoms before relying on one.
- Don't use it on broken or irritated skin, or if you're allergic to local anaesthetics.
- Patch test first on a small area of skin.
Arousal gels for him
Arousal gels and serums are made to create a sensation on the skin, often warming, cooling or tingling. They don't change how your body works; they change how things feel.
- Love to Love Pulse Me Down Penis Stimulating Gel 30mL ($44.95) is a mint-flavoured gel for external use.
- Love to Love Make Me Shiver Frenulum Stimulating Serum 30mL ($44.95) is a mint roll-on serum for the sensitive underside of the head of the penis.
A few rules:
- Patch test first, and start with a small amount. Cooling and warming ingredients like peppermint can feel much stronger on genitals than on your arm.
- They transfer. Your partner will feel it too, including inside the body, so ask first.
- Check condom compatibility. Many gels contain plant oils, and oil damages latex condoms. See our lube guide.
- Keep them away from eyes, and stop using one if it burns or itches.
Quick answers
How tight should a cock ring be? Snug, not tight. You should be able to take it off easily. If it pinches, hurts or causes numbness, it's too small.
Can I wear a cock ring with a condom? Yes. Make sure the ring doesn't pinch, roll or tear the condom, and use a lube that's safe with your condom.
Do delay sprays work for everyone? No. They change sensation, and results vary. If coming sooner than you'd like happens often, a doctor can help.
Will my order arrive discreetly? Yes. Every order ships in plain packaging. See discreet shopping.
